These Painting Results Blew Me Away

With over 1,000 votes the painting results are in. From my channel’s perspective, about 44% of you out there use Citadel paints. That’s not surprising to me but what is surprising is Vallejo commands second place with 22% of the votes!

Results as of October 7, 2024

Can I just say that I love Vallejo paints? I officially started into my hobby journey with a World War II game called Flames of War. My friendly local gaming store recommended Vallejo paints and I’m still using some of the bottles over 12 years later! That has made a lasting impression on me.

I know Citadel commands a big piece of the market share as many new painters getting started will start there, but I’m shocked that The Army Painter was third, albeit close. What surprised me most in looking at the results is the availability of The Army Painter products compared to other products. Citadel and The Army Painter are in every store I visit. Vallejo, in the USA, can be harder to come by. I actually have to order all of my Vallejo paints online which is not optimal.

Okay, for me personally I’m in the last category. I use a mixture of The Army Painter and Vallejo. I primarily use Vallejo for World War II schemes and The Army Painter for everything else. The Citadel line has been getting pushed out as I have an issue with two things, price and package.

By package, I can guarantee you I’ve spilled as much Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade as I’ve used. I know, be more careful right, but compared to the rest of the industry the paint pots feel antiquated. In addition, the paint dropper bottles allow for more consistent mixing, which I don’t do a ton of but it’s nice to give a proper recipe on a video instead of, “you want your paint to look like this.”

I think on the whole, the paint space is becoming very competitive and the quality is improving. The Army Painter Fanatics Range is very good. I’ve heard good things from Duncan Rhodes’ Two Thin Coats, Pro Acryl and numerous others. Quite frankly, if you’re a good painter you can use Apple Barrel paints and achieve a fantastic looking miniature.

This poll has given me a glimpse of what folks out there are using, and I’m pleasantly surprised that my painting videos line up pretty well. I’m actually going to try to incorporate the big 3 as it were in my videos going forward. If I’m using The Army Painter for example, I’ll try to give a good cross reference for Citadel and Vallejo to achieve a similar result. I think that’s important and not something I see a lot of.

Based on the above results, we should be doing it. Thanks for voting!
