YouTube Isn’t Easy

A lot of channels post on this topic. Today, I watched a video from Tabletop Time on how they have hit hard times with YouTube. It appears they have a staff of 4 or 5 people. It’s very sad to hear when folks are on hard times when they are trying to make a living doing what they love.

I make videos for YouTube and I fully understand how underwhelming the time investment can be. I always tell myself, however, nobody asked me to do this. I create content and to some extent I get paid for the time put into it, but would the time be better spent working odd jobs if I needed money; the answer is yes, absolutely.

It’s no secret that a lot of channels out there are businesses. On the face, everything looks fantastic but behind the scenes it may not always be. That’s where the crowd funding and asking the community for support comes in. That type of support, however, ebbs and flows. From what I’ve seen it’s like a shot in the arm but very rarely leads to long term success.

I hope it works out for them as I truly enjoy watching content from people that are passionate about the hobby. It’s not easy turning YouTube into a job, much less in a very niche segment such as wargaming. At some point you have to ask yourself, why did I start doing this? If the answer is, “I want to do something I enjoy and make money,” then be prepared because it’s not easy. With over 269k subscribers on Tabletop time, you can see why.
