Blitz Bowl Review

Blitz Bowl is the minor league to Warhammer’s fantasy football game, Blood Bowl. It takes places in a fantasy realm with fantasy teams such as Orcs, Dwarves, Elves, Vampires and more. This game can only be found at Barnes & Noble in the US as it is exclusive to them.

Blood Bowl has been around for decades and Blitz Bowl originally launched in 2018. It was followed up by a second version and received another update in 2024.

The starter set pictured to the right is the 2024 version featuring Orcs and Dwarf teams and at the time of writing this review was priced at $50.

Upon opening the box you’re greeted with traditional plastic sprues. The Orc team is in red and the Dwarf team is grey. You’ll get 6 figures, 3 game balls, a team coin and a score marker per team. The figures are detailed enough but probably not to the extent that I’ve come to expect and I’m totally ok with that.

You’ll also get a ton of cards to use in the game as it is an additional way to score points along with scoring touchdowns. The game also has specific dice that will come in the box along with team cards and this is where the box really shines!

All of the teams for the most part are included!

That’s right! You get access to practically all of the teams including their special rules. From Wood Elf to Amazon it’s all included. This is massively helpful for expanding your game to include more teams. In addition, you get the rulebook which teaches you how to play. This box includes everything you need to play the game and expand without the need to purchase additional items outside of miniatures. That’s a big plus!

In addition to all of this you also get a gameboard and dugout templates along with a throw ruler. So, what’s to complain about? Well, nothing really outside of exclusivity. This set really ticks all the boxes in my book. It’s a fast paced game of fantasy football with well written rules and interactions. The setting of The Crush and being a minor league to Blood Bowl is well thought out. I think it brings a lot of antiquated rules from years past up to the present. Overall, the box feels like a really good value and I’m glad I scooped it up.

All that’s left is to paint the models and hit the pitch! If you’re outside the US you can still have access to the game as Barnes & Noble will ship globally but I’m sure at a cost. That’s the only thing genuinely holding this game back from being a big success. We need more games that can honestly be played in an hour.

Rating: B

Excellent offering and value but exclusivity doesn’t make it available to everyone.
